Evaluation Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to a full product?

Here we can see how i have developed within my skills using Photoshop and designing as more successful composition within the variations of shots and full layout of the front cover of the magazine. A good example of this is how i have included more magazine conventions and looking at the use of colour and sticking to a more vibrant colour pallet. I have also included features such as a skyline and multiple images to support secondary feature stories and the use of plugs.

Evaluation question 6

What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learned how to use layers and the various tools within Photoshop to create an effective product from start to finish. This includes the initial editing of the images like fixing the levels and exposure of images and then smoothing the skin of the artists within my magazine, through to text manipulation and the use of drop shadows to create the feel of depth within the magazine. I have also learned how to use and utilize programs like prezi and survey monkey to help me conduct and present research when initially planning my product.

Evaluation question 5

How did you attract or address your audience?

I attracted my audience by looking at the work of already existing, successful magazines and look at their conventions and the bands which they would typically feature on and within their magazines. From this i constructed a magazine i knew which would appeal to the audience which i wished to target. I created a layout which was common and used bands which would draw attention. I also had a skyline which offered free posters within the magazine which i have seen used countless times as it allows for the potential buyer to see this offer which should hopefully entice them to pick up the magazine of the rack in stores. I also included the use of competition plugs on my front cover as this is another reason to entice a potential buyer to purchase the product.

Evaluation question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Looking at me research (survey monkey) my audience would be based almost entirely teenagers from under the age of 18 - 21 59%female and 41%. They would have interests in seeing many live bands and have some interest in fashion (spending £31 - £40 on clothing) Brands such as vans and Dr. Martin would be preferred by the readers as suggested by my research.

Evaluation Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Existing artists within the Pop Punk Genre.
Here is a selection of artist who reside within the Pop Punk genre. We have a wide array from small bands like 'Moose Blood' and 'WSTR' to huge bands like '5 Seconds Of Summer' and 'Neck Deep'. They show a wide range of varying styles of ascetic and ways which bands present themselves within the genre. We can see how  the attire and location of photography dramatically changes with each artist, from studio shots with different colored back drops to sat a shoot set outside within a grassy area. This makes it slightly more difficult to tell for the average person exactly what genre the bands fit within.

In depth artist evaluation

This is the band 'Moose Blood' We can see that the whole band are wearing skinny/spray on skinny jeans either in a dark blue or black with the majority of the band wearing t shirts and the drummer wearing a simplistic band t shirt. We can also clearly see some of the band sporting partial to full tattoo sleeves. From this i began to gather that i may need to incorporate tattoo designs within the artists which i was created as i could see from my research that they are quite a popular and regular thing to see within the pop punk genre. The specific style which seemed to be preferred by already existing artist is traditional tattoos, such as sailor Jerry styles and roses.

Here are some examples of musicians within the genre with these styles of tattoos;

5 Seconds Of Summer

5 Seconds Of Summer where the most popular/well known band i found when conducting my survey. this is why i chose to base the main elements of my band on their style and personas.

here is the research into the styles which the band have most commonly been seen wearing so i designed my costumes around these styles so that the main artist would appeal to the larger audience. i also incorporated the idea of tattoos as members of 5 Seconds Of Summer have some tattoos and other bands from within the scene like 'Moose Blood' and 'Neck Deep' have full tattoo sleeves so i felt it necessary to incorporate this into my magazine and the main bands image.

Evaluation Question 1

In what way does your media product use, devolve or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Here are two examples of front covers from Kerrang and Rocksound.

Here is my front cover.

Here we can see how I have used the conventions of other magazines to help me construct my own front cover.

I have chosen to have a skyline on my magazine to follow almost all magazines conventions. This is what most of the potential buyers will see when the magazine is placed on a rack so this will be the initial draw in for any of the potential buyers.

We see the use of the collection of band names which feature in various secondary stories (located in the lower left hand corner). This follows the conventions we see on the Rocksound cover. The practical application of this is is to allow the potential buyer a brief overview of what is to be featured in the magazine.

Mag draft

Here is my second draft for my Front Cover, Contents and double page spread.

These are examples of the tools which i used to help me create my product.

The main use of the Lasso tool was to cut exactly around the models head who is covering the masthead. I did this as otherwise he would of been underneath the masthead. The way in which i did this was hiding the masthead layer and using the lasso tool to select the area which was the models head then copy this and duplicate it on a separate layer. I then moved this second layer above the mastheads layer and then removed the hide feature on the mast heads layer, Thus creating the effect we see on the front cover.

The crop tool was used when creating the double page spread. I used it to extend the canvas of the image to the designated size to allow the room which i created for the main body of text. i then selected a the new are which i had created and used the gradient tool to create the subtle change from the pristine white of the infinity wall to the slight grey we see behind the text to give some color variation to the whole piece.

The Healing brush was used throughout my magazine to correct any skin blemishes to create the smooth Photoshop look we see with magazines. This tool uses content aware to correct any discoloration and effectively removing them from the image.

The text tool is very self explanatory in its use as i used it to create the text seen throughout the magazine. The tool mixed with the transform tool allowed for more manipulations and size options to more accurately fit the text into my magazine.

The Drop shadow tool was used again throughout my magazine to give the all the various sections depth and not have the magazines look so 2 dimensional. It also allowed me to create a more collaged feel to my magazine which is a concept i wished to go for as it feels more free flowing and interactive.
