Colour scheme ideas, Name ideas and feature story ideas
During my research stage i found that magazines which reside within my genre such as Kerrang and Rocksound, They tend to use whites reds and blacks. we also see rocksounds using a larger brigbhter colour pallet including the yellows and light blues we can see in the colour wheel image i have created using the Adobe colourwheel software when deciding on my colour scheme. This allos me to find the secific colours which will compliment eachother and allow the magazine to have a strong house style thoughout with the specific coulour codes being provided via the adobe colourwheel software.
Looking at results from my survey monkey survey i could see how many people go to multiple gigs every year. The idea of a world tour for my main story could strongly relate to this, however i also had a quite large percentage say they had yet to go to any live gigs this year, this would suggest that there could be a more reader friendly and relatable story for my main feature story. In my questionnaire every responder said that they listen to music in some form, form MP3 files to CD or even vinyl. This strongly suggests to the main feature story revolving around a band recording and releasing a new album. This would sit better with the information i have gathered with my answers from the questionnaire. Even though i have chosen to have my main feature story to revolve around a bands recording and releasing of a new album, I can still have world tour references and smaller gig referances within the magazines in articles from the contents page and on the cover as other feature stories within the magazine. This would allow me to add more original images within the magazines and possible allow me to take some live performance images to vary the types of shots within the magazine and show my talent in adapting to different lighting and my control of my camera work |

Here are a collection of various images which relate to the genre which my magazine will be based around. This allows me to see what srot of styles places i should place my models.
Costume designs
Here i have selected 4 images of the band '5 Seconds of Summer'. I selected to evaluate the outfits of this popular pop punk band as they where voted as the readers favourite band from a selection of popular pop punk and alternative bands and musicians.
In all 4 images the boys can be seen wearing black skinny/spray on skinny jeans. This clearly is a iconic feature of modern day alternative bands as in every image 5 seconds of summer are wearing the same style of jeans, also looking at other bands we know that is is a common feature of an alternative artists outfit.
Common ideas for the torso is one member of the band wearing a loose fit flanel shirt. other members can bee seen sporting band shirts, hoodies and vests. these are mainly quite minimal in colour going for blacks, greys and whites, with some reds as well.
Im some of the images, some of the band members can be seen wearing headgear in the form of a bandana and a snapback cap. these are again very minimal in their colour, mainly being black and grey.
The bands hair varies from member to member. One member has longish wavy hair which his quite messy and looks very effortless. One member had Coloured hair with a fringe and fluffed up back and sides. This is a modern take on the traditional pop punk styles of the late nineties to early two thousands, like Billie Joe Armstrong and Deryck whibley. one member has a quiff with brushed forward sides, giving a messy feel whist still feeling stylish. finally we have a standard fringe with a modern take of having tapered back and sides to the hair.
In some of the images the band is wearing jackets. These vary from image to image, but we can see a rocker/biker style leather jacket and black denim jackets. we also have a standard zip up hoodie and pull over hoodie.
I will base my costume for my main artists photos on the information gathered on this bands clothing choices.
Here is my ideas for my costume design for the costumes which my models for my main feature story photo shoot will be wearing. I have used the inspiration of the images of 5 Seconds Of Summer. I have chosen to give all my models black jeans like the boys from 5 Seconds of Summer as it is a very common trait of the genre. I have varying headwear for 3 of my models. this shows the varying styles within the genre and how the outfits can vary but still sit within the same genre and give of the same vibe. This is the same with the torso wear like the band vests, baseball tee, flannel shirt and denim jacket. These still can all be seen as various types of clothing from the Pop Punk scene.

My reader profile
Design your own reader profile for your magazine, include the areas you
noticed when researching in to other profiles. Include imagery and statistics
(these will be made up accordingly to suit the target you are aiming to consume
your product.)
To create my own reader profile i created a 10 question survey to gather information about my audience so i could best tailor my magazine towards the readers wants and needs.

Reader profile research
A reader profile is list of qualities and traits which the average reader of a magazine has. This includes information about the social economic class of your readers, the average age range of the readers, how many people purchase the magazine and how many people read the magazine each month.
Companies produce reader profiles to allow their marketing teams to see where to advertise and sell their magazines to reach their target market. They also publish reader profiles to show to companies who wish to advertise in magazines to show what audience and how large an audience a company will be advertising to if they choose to place an advert into that magazine.
An example of a reader profile is the reader profile of Rocksound.
In their reader profile they state they reach an average of 585,000 people each month. This will allow advertisers to judge whether it is worth placing an advert into their magazine as it may or may not reach a large enough audience. They also state they reach 150K+ people over social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
They state they have an audience average age range of 15-24 and 59% of which are females. They then go on to state various other facts and statistics about their audience to show how they spend their free time and their disposable income. Some examples of these statistics are Rocksounds readers spend over £210 million on music and attending gigs each year, they also spend £245 million on fashion each year. This gives other companies an insight into the sort of audience they could be advertising to. For example a band may choose to advertise about their upcoming tour or new album within Rocksound. However a company looking to advertise watches which cost in excess of £2000 would not choose to advertise within Rocksound as they would not reach their target market.
Magazines also produce these reader profiles to allow them to look at an audiences interests and tailor their magazine towards the audiences wants and needs. For example publishing advertisements that they feel would interact with their audience such as tour posters for bands.

final design of college magazine
This is my finished front cover for a student/college magazine. I opted for the colour as I feel it draws they eye slightly better that the non colour magazine and non colour does not fit the feel of the magazine. I added some more splashes of colour within the lines of text to give some more colour variation and to slightly draw the eye of the potential buyer. I have also added the tag line at the bottom to give the magazine a slogan and give a slightly more professional feel and border the bottom of the front cover.
Drafts of magazine
These are my draft front covers. I have chosen to experiment with the use of a colored main image and a black and white main image to see how it would effect the professional appearance of my magazine. I feel both have their merits but the colour does seem to draw the eye slightly more which would allow it to stand out slightly more on the magazine and normally the front cover and its main image is the thing that will draw a potential buyer to that specific magazine, so colour seems to be the way forward with this particular product.
Color Scheme
Here is a selection of the colour pallet which i will use on the front cover of my college magazine. Due to previous research i have seen that a limited colour pallet can create effective front covers, thta do not look overcrowded or ghastly. Due to this I plan on only using the strong red to cut though the black and white which will be used to contrast against each other to allow for an effective, professional, magazine cover.

College magazine conventions
Main Story - Main story would relate to The main image. Normally the text would be larger or bold to draw the attention to the reader and to show that this is the main article within the magazine.
Main image - The main image is the most important part of any front cover of a magazine. This is used to draw attention to the reader/potential buyer. The main image usually dictates what the colour scheme of the magazine will be as clashing colours
URL - Shows the users where they can get more information online and can contact the company via Email.
Barcode - Allows cashier to scan when purchasing. This is more of a general magazine convention as college magazines are normally free.
Feature Stories - these are other stories within the magazine which have small tag lines to give the reader/potential buyer a view into the contents of the magazine.

Breif
To design a College magazine front cover and mock up contents page. Any images used on the front cover must be original images.
Below are some examples of magazine covers which i have used to formulate my initial ideas.
Initial ideas
Looking at other magazine's front covers it had lead to me to decide on having a very strong color scheme, but with quite a minimal use of color variation. This allows the main image of the magazine to stand out. Looking at magazines such as vogue, Rolling Stone and TIME; A red, white and black color scheme would seem to be the the most popular color scheme to use. Red would be used for the magazines title/name to stand out against the white and black colors and draw attention to the magazine with its bold contrasting colors. Any sub headings and information on the magazines content would variate from black and white text. I feel a use of only a couple of images would by the most beneficial for my front cover as they can cause the cover to look cluttered and draw away attention from the main image on the cover.Below are some examples of magazine covers which i have used to formulate my initial ideas.
